What's the verdict? Go the Windows 10 route to get the job done for free (but with some effort). Plus, Windows 10's tools just aren't as easy to use. Ashampoo WinOptimizer, on the other hand, is something that you know exists after purchasing it. Unfortunately, Windows 10's tools don't live on your desktop or Start menu, so it's easy to overlook them. We haven't experienced that loss with Windows 10's built-in tools. In addition, two third-party tune-up utilities wrecked our hard drives in the semi-recent past.

They were extremely useful tools in the Windows 8/7XP eras, but we find them harder to recommend with Windows 10, as the operating system lets you effectively tune-up your PC for free. Should You Buy Ashampoo WinOptimizer?Īdmittedly, there's less value in buying a tune-up utility now than in past years. You probably don't want to do that every time you want to securely delete a file. Admittedly, Windows 10 has a feature that overwrites deleted data, Cipher, but it requires firing up Windows Powershell and tinkering with the command line. Plus, Ashampoo includes File Wiper (permanently deletes files for security), File Manipulator (splits files into multiple parts for emailing or copying to media), Disk Doctor (searches the hard drive for errors), and Duplicate Finder (finds and deletes duplicate files). There's no one button-or even one interface-that activates them all. With Windows 10, you have a Disk Defragmenter, Storage Sense, and Startup applications, but they're all located in different places within the operating system. However, that doesn't mean Ashampoo isn't a worthy purchase.įor starters, WinOptimizer has all of its system-enhancing tools in one convenient location. WinOptimizer topped Windows 10 in zero areas. Obviously, Ashampoo WinOptimizer positively impacts your PC, but you may wonder how its improvements compare with those that come from Windows 10's own tune-up apps. The testbed's boot time dropped to a respectable 1 minute and 14 seconds (just three seconds behind Iolo's result), while its Single-Core, Multi-Core, and OpenCL numbers improved to 820 2,637 and 62,578, respectively.

Windows 10's built-in tools offered comparable improvements. WinOptimizer didn't claim a top spot in any of the four testing categories, but I experienced snappier performance in my everyday computing. The new boot time placed 14 seconds behind AVG TuneUp's time and 28 seconds behind Iolo System Mechanic's category-leading mark. However, the Multi-Core and OpenCL tests dropped to 162, respectively.

My testbed's boot time dropped to 1 minute and 39 seconds, while the Single-Core score rose to 620. The rig scored 605 on Geekbench's Single-Core test 2,469 on the Multi-Core test and 61,032 on the OpenCL test.Īs expected, I saw significant test score improvements after running WinOptimizer. I ran each test three times, and then averaged the numbers.īefore I ran WinOptimizer to clean up the system, my testbed-which has an Intel Core i5 CPU, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, 16GB of RAM, 2TB hard drive, and the Windows 10 operating system-booted in a lengthy 2 minutes and 32 seconds. I tested Ashampoo WinOptimizer's ability to clean a cruddy Windows PC by performing two tests: I ran the Geekbench system performance tool and measured boot times-before and after running the tune-up utility-to measure speed improvements.
